Options Guide III: Income Strategies

Covered Calls, Cash-Secured Puts and Their Risks

Options Guide · Foundations

Covered calls and cash-secured puts: where premium income comes from, what it costs and where it stops.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Investors who hold stocks or ETFs often consider selling options against those holdings to add premium income to their portfolios. The hard part is seeing that income for what it is: small, frequent gains in most months and concentrated, severe losses in a few. The hidden leverage of margin can push an account toward forced liquidation in a sharp decline. Income writing that looks only at the income side can hand back years of premium in a single crash.

The book opens with the seller's mindset, contrasting two Nvidia earnings reports, February 2024 and November 2025, to show the seller's occasional loss and usual gain. It then covers covered calls and cash-secured puts in detail: choosing strike and expiry, blue chips versus high-volatility stocks, a standard roll in the 2022 bear market under the BXM rules, the capped rebound of March 2020, and three responses to the April 2025 tariff shock: hold, stop out or roll. Chapter 4 is devoted to margin and retraces, day by day, the margin path of a single SPY put through the 2020 pandemic crash. Chapter 5 weighs the strengths and weaknesses of income writing, including capped upside, black-swan risk and psychological strain. Chapters 6 and 7 backtest range-bound conditions and live rules on SPY and TSLA history, and Chapter 8 introduces the Wheel and the Iron Condor.

Risk receives the same space as return, and every case states its rules and estimation method so that it can be reproduced. By the end, you will be able to judge whether your holdings suit an income approach, choose suitable strikes and expiries for each holding, stress-test your account against the historical scenarios the book replays, and recognise the conditions in which you should cut size or stop selling.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Where the income comes from. The book traces premium to two sources, time decay and the premium of implied over realized volatility, and draws on research such as Carr and Wu to show that sellers are paid for bearing tail risk.

  • Equal space for risk. A full chapter on margin retraces, day by day, one SPY put from February to March 2020, showing how an account moves from an ordinary position to a margin call.

  • Reproducible case rules. The 2022 bear-market roll follows the published BXM methodology, and the SPY and TSLA backtests state entry timing, Delta and expiry handling, so readers can test the results under the same rules.

  • Many market regimes. Cases run from the 2015-2016 range-bound market and the February 2018 short-volatility collapse to the 2020 pandemic crash and the April 2025 tariff shock, covering crashes, rallies and sideways markets.

  • Choosing between structures. Covered calls and cash-secured puts, and blue chips and growth stocks, are compared side by side, showing that both structures take their largest losses when the underlying falls and what giving up upside costs.

WHO IT IS FOR

  • Long-term holders of stocks or ETFs who want to add premium income to existing positions

  • Investors who want to buy a favoured stock below the current price and are weighing a limit order against selling a put

  • Traders who already sell options but are unsure about margin and their risk in extreme markets

  • Professional readers who evaluate covered-call funds or put-write products

IN BRIEF

Like a landlord collecting rent, sell options to earn premium on the shares you hold. It explains where covered calls and cash-secured puts earn their return, what they cost and where they stop. With return and risk weighed equally, build an income approach that is durable and repeatable.
