Box spreads, risk reversals and diagonals: moving from single directional bets to portfolios and risk budgets.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Once traders know the basic strategies and the Greeks, many of them stall at the same point. Each trade is still a directional bet, and when several positions sit side by side they cannot say how much Delta and Vega the account carries in total, or how much it would lose in the worst week. Institutional traders start from a different place. Before a trade is opened they state how large the loss will be if the view is wrong and how profit and loss shift as price and volatility move, treating trading as the joint management of risk across price, volatility, time and interest rates.

The six chapters follow that line of thought. Chapter 1 starts with capital flows, risk-neutral pricing and dealer Gamma exposure, using August 2020, when QQQ and the VIX rose together, to show how hedging flows move prices. Chapters 2 to 4 each take apart one structure: the implied rate of the box spread, introduced through the September 2019 spike in repo rates; risk reversals and the pricing of skew, through the 2015 Swiss franc de-peg and NVDA earnings; and the balance of Theta and Vega, through a leg-by-leg breakdown of a QQQ diagonal. Chapters 5 and 6 move to the portfolio: Vega neutrality and Gamma scalping, weights and correlation across strategies, multi-horizon risk budgets and automated execution.

Every case comes with its data sources and calculations, and the conclusions include unfavorable ones: in backtests from 2017 to 2024, none of the multi-strategy portfolios beat a plain iron condor on a risk-adjusted basis. The final section applies the methods to a $100,000 personal account, choosing contracts and size under the rule that the maximum loss on any single trade is held to 1% to 2% of account capital. Readers come away able to review their own positions through portfolios and risk budgets, and to rerun the book's conclusions with their own parameters.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Risk defined before entry. Each structure is introduced through its payoff at expiry, its Greeks and its worst case, so the question of how much a wrong view costs comes before direction. Chapter 1 uses dealer Gamma hedging to explain how hedging flows push prices.

  • Opens with real market events. Each chapter begins with a verifiable episode: the 2019 repo rate spike, the 2015 Swiss franc de-peg, the 2016 Brexit vote and the 2018 wipeout of OptionSellers client accounts, before turning to the structure in question.

  • Reproducible leg-by-leg calculations. Cases list strikes, expirations, implied volatility assumptions and the Greeks of each leg, as in the two-leg breakdown of a QQQ diagonal. Sources and calculations sit beside every conclusion, so readers can check them.

  • Backtests reported as they came out. Using 93 months of data from 2017 to 2024, the book compares three multi-strategy portfolios with a plain iron condor and finds that adding structures did not improve risk-adjusted returns. It keeps these results and explains why.

  • Scaled to a personal account. Chapter 6 works through a $100,000 account, moving from SPX to the mini XSP contract, sizing so the maximum loss on any single trade is held to 1% to 2% of account capital, then comparing net results with Treasury bills.
